Children Walkie Talkie

September 4th, 2009

What boy did not want a set of walkie talkies for his birthday or Christmas?  Children’s walkie talkies were featured prominently in the blockbuster movie Toy Story and Small Soldiers.  Many early children’s walkie talkies were not the voice type, but were Morse code operated.  As electronics have become smaller and less expensive the major manufacturers of two way radios like Audiovox, Uniden, Motorola and others have offered a number of less powerful children’s walkie talkies in their own brands and in various themed licenses as well.  While you can find very inexpensive two way radios for “adults” in either FRS only or GMRS and FRS hybrids, the vast majority of children’s walkie talkies are FRS only due to cost considerations.

On Amazon.com alone there are eighty eight different entries for children’s walkie talkies.  The “adult” two way radios are generally the same style with an amorphous oval shape with an indentation around the middle of the unit to fit the hand better.  Engineers have thrown out that standard when making two way radios for kids.  Many times the designs are driven by the particular license they are manufactured under.

For example, there are several models under the Marvel Comics license.  There is a pair of walkie talkies shaped like Spiderman and the Human Torch for $13.95.  There is also a pair of figural Spiderman walkie talkies for $12.95.  With the new Transformers movie bringing in such a huge box office the toys and cartoons are seeing a renaissance in sales as well.  There is a pair of Transformer PowerHead walkie talkies in the shape of the heads of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee for $16.95.  Power Ranger figural two way radios, Sponge Bob radios with flexible safety antennas, Hello Kitty, Rescue Heroes, Bakugan, Lego, Disney Princess and Little Mermaid are some of the other licenses.  If your child has a particular favorite show then you can probably find a children’s walkie talkie in that license.  There are also models from Kid Quest and National Geographic that are literally clones of each other just in different skin colors.  All of these children’s walkie talkie sets are single channel with only AA or AAA batteries for power.  Range is generally less than 75 feet line of site.

If you want something your children can use that will work with your two way radios I would suggest purchasing a higher end model that has channels that can be set.
